CLASSROOM OF THE FUTURE
ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI PRIMARY SCHOOL, LONDON
The Classroom of the Future is one of 30 projects funded by the DCSF with the aim of challenging conventional thinking on school building design. This project provided a new stand alone classroom building which incorporates a telescope, an indoor tropical garden and leading edge low energy and environmental measures.
The scheme includes the innovative combination of a stressed skin ply teaching pod above a central toilet core with a fluorpolymer ETFE membrane enclosing an adjoining conservatory area.
The classroom was constructed within the grounds of a primary school, therefore the additional consideration of confining the works to a restricted site demise was factored into the design and programme/methodology to ensure that the safety and welfare of the school's users was maintained at all times.
